In this one, I’m going to dive into the five things I would never do during my 4C loc journey. As you may or may not know, I’m about to celebrate my three-year locaversary this month, and over the years, I’ve compiled a list of things that I absolutely won’t do with my locs. I want to share these gems with you! Whether you’re new to the loc journey or a seasoned loc head, one or all of these “Loc Nevers” might be something you want to add to your list. Let’s get into it!
1. Never Combine Locs with the Two-Strand Twists After 6 Months
When it comes to combining locs with a two-strand twist method, I’ve learned that it’s best to do it within the first year of your loc journey. The longer you wait, the more time it takes for your locs to combine properly. I made the mistake of combining a loc three months into my journey, and nearly three years later, it still hasn’t completely sealed. So, my advice is to do your research and decide on your loc size before starting your 4C loc journey!
2. Go Too Long Without Separate Roots
It’s essential to avoid going too long without separating the hair at your roots, especially after a wash. The ideal timeframe may vary depending on your hair type and personal preference, but for me, I wouldn’t go more than four weeks without separating my roots. Trust me; it’s crucial, especially with my 4C hair type. Neglecting this step can lead to your roots marrying together and it can be painful and time-consuming to separate after waiting too long.
3. Sleep Without a Satin Bonnet
Satin bonnets are lint blockers! You might not like the look of most of them, but I got this cute one from Yani Best and wear it all over the house to prevent lint from jumping in my locs. I would never even think about sleeping without a satin bonnet. Lint has a sneaky way of finding its way into your locs, and I’m not here for it. Some might say they sleep on satin pillowcases, but I’m all in – satin bonnet, satin pillowcase, and satin pajamas. Don’t play with it; protect your locs!
4. Forget To Wear a Satin Bonnet When Putting on a Shirt
And while we’re on the topic of satin bonnets, I would never skip wearing one when I’m putting on a shirt. Lint loves to hide on shirts and can attack your locs as soon as you think about pulling your head through. I used to be a bit lazy with this, but after a lint disaster in the back row of my locs, I said, “Never again!”
5. Compare The Loc Journey to Others
Last but certainly not least, I would never compare my loc journey to someone else’s. The beauty of the loc journey is that it’s personal to you. No one else will ever have locs quite like yours, even if you go to the same loctician or have the same amount of locs. Embrace the uniqueness; it’s what sets you apart in a world full of look-alikes!
Overall, everyone’s journey is different and everyone’s list of “loc nevers” is going to be different every time. Thank you so much for stopping by and taking a look at mine!
