I love a Canadian Tux! I’ve been seeing more people jump back onto the “Canadian Tuxedo train” recently, and I ain’t mad at it! In the July 2023 issue of Ebony Magazine, Issa Rae is featured wearing a fabulously styled Canadian Tuxedo that made me gasp out loud.
Although the “Can-Tux” has been a staple in my wardrobe – I still don’t see it often enough, and I’d love to change that.
Check out a few tips below to help style your next Canadian Tuxedo outfit!
What is a Canadian Tuxedo, exactly?
O’l school actor and musician, Bing Crosby first stepped out in the 1950s wearing the relaxed and cohesive look- which now classifies this iconic, denim-on-denim fashion statement: “an oldie but a goodie.”
It consists of a denim jacket paired with denim jeans, but, you can funk it up any way you like!
Styling Tips
A few friends of mine have expressed that they usually stay away from wearing denim on denim because they can’t seem to figure out how to style it, but it’s all about having fun and creating the outfit that makes you feel your most beautiful!
Here are a few ways you can jazz up this classic style to fit your own uniqueness!
Play with Textures
Choose denim pieces in varying shades and washes. This way, you’ll be able to appreciate the contrast between the jacket and jeans. Opting for a denim shirt instead of a jacket can also add versatility and dimension to your outfit.
You can elevate your Canadian Tuxedo look by experimenting with different textures. Mixing textures adds visual interest to your outfit and breaks the monotonous vibe.
Have Fun With Accessories
This is where you can really play and have fun because you have a wide range of accessories you can go for. You can play off of the hardware on your denim and go with silver or gold jewelry. Bold or minimalistic. But you can also go bright and make a statement with pops of a fun, dopamine color.
Add Personality with Layers
Layering your Canadian Tux, adds a little flavor by creating depth within your outfit. You could do a plain white tee, a patterned or solid satin blouse, or a comfy sweater.
Layering is also a great way to stay warm during the colder months while bringing dimension and personality to your look.
Modern Adaptations
In recent years, the Canadian Tuxedo has undergone adaptations to keep up with current trends. Celebrities and fashion influencers have embraced the style, exploring new ways to make it their own and so can you!
Here’s my spin on the Canadian Tux! (Don’t mind the mask, this was at the beginning of the virus-we-do-not-speak-of).
